Five-time world and international boxing champion MIA ST. JOHN is a passionate mental health advocate. Dedicated to empowering individuals who suffer from mental illness, homelessness, addiction and poverty, St. John founded the nonprofit, El Saber es Poder (Knowledge is Power). As part of her advocacy, she works to increase federal funding in schools, and launched a youth wellness program in El Centro del Pueblo in Los Angeles based off of her book, The Knockout Workout. St. John’s son Julian, who struggled with schizophrenia and addiction, died in 2014 in the care of La Casa Mental Health Rehabilitation Center in Long Beach, California. The tragic loss of her son furthered St. John’s quest to reform and end corruption in L.A. County’s Department of Mental Health. She currently hosts the podcast In the Ring with Mia St. John, and runs Stone Art, Julian’s former art studio in Palm Springs, which is now a welcoming space for people to find healing through boxing, yoga, meditation, and art.
